After the first three minutes, there was no denying who would win the Penn-Trafford Warriors vs. West Mifflin Titans girls basketball game on Thursday.

P-T took a 9-0 lead, including two three-pointers from Raya Johnson, and West Mifflin was forced to take a timeout with just under 6 minutes left in the first. By the end of the first half, P-T had a 41-point lead.

The Warriors picked up their third section win and maintained their undefeated season record (9-0, 3-0) in Section 2-5A.

Twins Olivia Weishaar (left) and Hanna Weishaar (right) wait to be subbed in. Combined, the Weishaars scored 12 points for Penn-Trafford.

The Warriors shut out West Mifflin in the first quarter 21-0.

With a little less than 7 minutes left in the second quarter, West Mifflin’s Modesty Brown scored the Titan’s first points. Brown led West Mifflin in scoring with 10 points throughout the game.

The second quarter was the highest scoring for the Warriors (24 points). Hanna Weishaar led the quarter with 7 points for P-T.

At the end of the half, P-T had a 41-point lead over the Titans (45-4).

West Mifflin’s Modesty Brown works against Penn-Trafford’s Olivia Weishaar. Brown led the Titans with 10 points in their 62-17 loss against the Warriors.

In the third quarter, Brown scored another four points. Paired with strong defense and P-T’s missed shots, West Mifflin scored 7 points compared to the Warriors’ 13.

P-T led at the end of the third quarter 58-11.

The Warriors subbed through their bench in the fourth quarter and held onto their dominating lead.

P-T finished the game 62-17 over West Mifflin. Top scorers for the Warriors were Lauren Marton with 12 points, and Kamryn Pieper with 10.

Penn-Trafford increases their record to 9-0 and will play next against North Hills on Dec. 27.

With winter sports getting into full swing Penn-Trafford senior basketball and volleyball standout, Kamryn Piper, sat down with the Warrior to reflect on her P-T career, her goals for the season and her recent commitment to Point Park for basketball.

Q: What position do you play in basketball?

A: I can play all positions but mainly I play the stretch forward and I can either bring up the ball or like on the post.

Q: What drew you to Point Park?

A: It is just so different then all the other colleges I have been to that are all surrounded by trees and there is less to do. Just being in the city, it is way more energetic.

David Dziedzic
Piper recently committed to Point Park

Q: What are you planning on studying at Point Park?

A: I am looking towards psychology but I am not sure what field though.

Q: What is your favorite part of playing basketball?

A: Just the excitement you get whenever you have completed what you feel like you need to do for the team and just being a part of something.

Q: How many years have you played on varsity for the high school basketball team?

A: All four years of high school.

Q: What do you enjoy most about playing on the high school team?

A: How I have been able to grow up with the girls I have been with since second grade and seeing everyone grow together. Just having that bond with each other.

Q: What is your favorite memory on the high school team?

A: With my grade, we always played [basketball] at like Turtle Creek and that is probably where we had most of our character development and we just got to learn each other. We beat some teams that we never thought we would beat, I mean we were good and I do not know why but we were pretty good.

Q: Do you play on a club team outside of the high school team?

A: I play for Western PA Bruins.

Q: What do you enjoy about playing for the Western PA Bruins?

Annabelle Aquino
Piper is a four-year starter

A: I enjoy it because I get to meet people from other states, different schools in the area and so I have created so many friendships from just being on that team and going to tournaments.

Q: What is the team goal for the high school team this season?

A: As of right now to go undefeated, win the section, make it pretty far in the playoffs and potentially win WPIALs.

Q: What is your personal goal for this season?

A: My personal goal is I want to win the section because we did it in volleyball and I want to double it by winning it in basketball.

Q: What are you going to miss the most about this team when you graduate?

A: The girls I have grown up with especially from Turtle Creek, those few I have always played with and we never quit on each other. We have always been together.

While the weather is getting colder, Penn-Trafford High School is heating things up with a new winter formal, a Sadie Hawkins Snow Ball dance. This means that girls will ask the guys, a reverse of the traditional dances where the guy asks the girl.

The dance, which is being sponsored by the Community Action Program (CAP), has a semi-formal dress code with long dresses encouraged, but all students are welcome to wear what they feel comfortable. The Snow Ball is scheduled to take place on Jan. 25 in the main gym, formatted like Homecoming with students able to go into the cafeteria to relax and talk. The dance is open for students in any grade, with tickets being sold for $20 in the cafeteria during lunch or in Nurse Popovich’s office from Jan. 6 to 21.

The Snow Ball was the brainchild of sophomore Skylar Matz, who came up with the idea while chatting with her friends.

“My friends and I were talking about wanting another dance and I remembered that Norwin had a Snow Ball every year, so I decided to do something about it and make it happen,” stated Matz.

Once the dance got official approval from the administration, the project needed a sponsor, so Matz approached CAP, which she is a member of, about making the dance officially happen. Lisa Popovich, who is the CAP sponsor, agreed that it would be a fun opportunity for many students and that CAP would take it on.

“[The dance] is wonderful because it is a winter thing,” stated Popovich. “After Christmas, there is a let-down, so by having this dance it is something to look forward to.”

From there different details of the dance were hammered out, like the decision to make the dance a Sadie Hawkins.

The Snowball is scheduled to take place on Jan. 25th

“I chose it to be girls asking guys because I wanted to give girls a chance to show the guys it is really not that hard to do, and honestly I think girls could make much more creative proposals,” stated Matz.

Matz and the rest of CAP are hoping that the event will become an annual tradition for P-T like Homecoming and Prom.

“I’m hoping that this event stays and we continue to do it for years to come,” stated Matz. “I think this event could be just as fun as Homecoming, but it’s honestly up to us as high schoolers to make it fun and make the best of it.”

The Snow Ball will be just one of the many projects that CAP participates in across the high school and community every year. They are also a part of multiple food drives, a winter toy drive and the ever popular Big Buddy Program.

With 539 members, CAP has a mission of volunteering and helping high school students to understand the importance of giving back.

“We need to help others in the community,” stated Popovich. “CAP helps teach students to not think just about themselves, but thinking about others and how what we can do together can make things better for others.”

If any students are interested in joining CAP they are always welcoming new members. All a student has to do is sign up on their website, https://www.pthscap.com/, and pay the $10 fee, which can be turned in at the Nurse’s office.

“We [CAP] always have things going on,” stated Popovich. “It is a great way to get your 30 hours of community service and a great way to help the community.”

The Penn-Trafford High School Drama Guild recently held auditions for this year’s spring musical, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” These auditions were held on Dec. 10 and 11, with callbacks on Dec. 12.

“It’s a brand-new show,” Jen Haberberger, P-T art teacher and drama guild producer, said. “It was just released for schools to do, and we’re the first ones in the area to get to do it.”

Auditions were spread across two nights, providing flexibility for students with other commitments. During the auditions, participants were divided into groups of five to learn a dance, sing a solo and engage in a brief conversation with the director.

“Sometimes if you sing a song well but you’re not prepared when we ask questions, we look at how you react,” Habeberger stated.

This allows the directors to gauge how students handle unexpected situations, which is an important skill for performing in a live show.

Following the auditions, some students may be asked to return for callbacks. Callbacks are used to evaluate how well performers’ voices blend together or read from the script.

“Not having a callback doesn’t mean you didn’t make the show —– it just means we don’t need to see you again,” Haberberger said. “Callbacks help us narrow things down.”

Haberberger explained the process of selecting “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” as the 2025 spring musical.

“It’s hard because kids want to do things that are really popular,” she stated. “With ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ it was a great show, but there’s a lot of people who don’t know it… We lost a lot of money.”

She added that while the Drama Guild leaders do not always agree on a show, this year there was little debate, although the classic show “Hello Dolly” has been a frequent suggestion in the past.

To help students prepare for auditions, the Drama Guild held a workshop on Dec. 3. The audition workshop provided participants with the songs they would be required to sing during auditions, as well as a dance similar to the one they would perform at auditions. Haberberger stated that the workshop can be a great opportunity for kids who have never auditioned or have only auditioned in middle school.

“It helps them understand what we’re looking for,” she added.
Rehearsals will begin on Jan. 2 and continue until the spring performances. The show will be performed in the P-T High School auditorium over two weekends: April 4-6 and April 11-13.

The highly-anticipated third season of Marvel’s “What If…?” is set to bring the animated anthology series to a conclusion. The season itself will feature a total of eight episodes.

Season Three of “What If…?” will premiere on Dec. 22, and each episode release daily until Dec. 29.

“What If…?” is directed by Bryan Andrews with AC Bradley as head writer. The show features Uatu the Watcher, voiced by Jeffrey Wright, who is an omnipotent being observing multiple universes’ events from a distance, unable to interfere.

According to Screen Rant, fans can look forward to new characters joining the series for Season Three, including White Vision, Monica Rambeau, Red Guardian, Agatha Harkness, Shang-Chi, Moon Knight, Kat e Bishop, Dormammu, Mysterio, Ironheart, Arishem, Byrdie and Storm. Additionally, other Watchers, played by Jason Isaacs, D.C. Douglas and Darin De Paul, will make an appearance — these characters are named “the Eminence,” “the Incarnate” and “the Executioner,” respectively.

Other cast members reprising their roles include Mick Wingert as Tony Stark, Lake Bell as Natasha Romanoff, Josh Keaton as Steve Rogers and Devery Jacobs as Kahhori. Live-action star Hayley Atwell will also be returning for her role as Peggy Carter, most likely as the Captain Carter variant seen in Seasons One and Two.

In the trailers, it is shown that Season Three will feature stories like a road trip with Winter Soldier and Red Guardian, “a 1930s screwball musical,” an Avengers mech battle and a team-up between Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop in a Western setting.

Among rumored episode titles are “What if…Wanda watched musicals instead of sitcoms?” and “What if… Natasha Romanoff survived Vormir?”; the former can be corroborated with the aforementioned “screwball musical.”

Additionally, one fan-favorite theory involves variations on the title, “What if… The Other Half Had Been Snapped?”, referring to the moment in which Thanos snapped his fingers using the completed Infinity Gauntlet in “Avengers: Infinity War.” Many want to know what would have happened had the other half of the universe been killed instead.

The third and final season of “What If…?” is scheduled to premiere on Dec. 22, and each of its episodes will be released daily until Dec. 29.

Both student sections decided on a blackout theme at the Penn-Trafford vs. Franklin Regional boys basketball game this Friday, shining all the light on the court where a fierce rivalry was settled.

Zach Feldman pivots with the ball in front of Panther Anthony Mitchell. Feldman led Penn-Trafford with 17 points in their 59-54 victory over Franklin Regional.

After losing both games to Franklin last season, the Warriors would not let them win this time: even if it meant overcoming a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter, scoring a buzzer-beater to enter overtime and finishing the game 59-54.

“We were all fired up for the game,” said Zach Feldman, who scored 17 points for P-T.

Throughout the game, the tables were turned constantly, and the leading team always differed from the previous quarter’s.

P-T started down in the first quarter; the Panthers doubled their score 10-5.

The Warriors turned the first table in the next eight minutes. Momentum from numerous defensive blocks by Feldman pushed the Warriors to take the lead 14-12 with 4:24 left in the second. P-T went into halftime leading 22-16.

Penn-Trafford’s Tyler Anthony scores on a jumper. Anthony made three threes during the night and 14 total points.

Franklin Regional’s Connor Crossey, the only returning starter this season for the Panthers, took over after halftime. He led the Panthers in scoring by the end of the third and led overall with 25 points. By the end of the third, Franklin Regional had reclaimed their lead 38-29.

The fourth quarter was the most important for both teams. At Franklin’s max, they had a 13-point lead over Penn-Trafford.

But the Warriors had not given up yet.

Down by seven points, and only two minutes remaining, P-T kicked it into high gear. Franklin had at least seven turnovers in the fourth quarter, allowing the Warriors to pass in the paint to Feldman, or dish to Tyler Anthony on the three-point line.

Feldman backed into his defender and scored another layup; the Warriors were only one point away (44-45) with 24.4 seconds left.

P-T was forced to foul Anthony Mitchell, who made one of his free throws with 17.9 seconds on the clock. Franklin led 46-44.

The Panthers switched to a 2-3 zone and Tyler Anthony was open on the perimeter for a three. The ball bounced on the rim, before being rebounded by Evan Gross mid-jump. Gross shot the ball into the basket while in the air, and the buzzer rang.

P-T had made it to overtime.

“I saw Tyler shoot it, and I knew he’s a great shooter so I knew it was going to be a short rebound,” said Gross. “All I had to do was crash the boards and find a way to make a play.”

The Warriors quickly took control of overtime after Feldman scored a layup and Stone made free throws. Franklin had no other option than to foul, which only increased P-T’s lead.

P-T finished off the home game 59-54, increasing their record to 3-3. This is their first section win and first win after two losses. Franklin is now 3-3.

The Warriors will play next at Albert Gallatin on Dec. 17.

“We’re going to keep rolling with the same energy. Coming off a win, we’ll all be hot,” said Feldman.

The Penn-Trafford Lady Warriors maintained their undefeated record after a convincing 57-31 victory against Greensburg Salem in their first section game this Thursday.

After playing back-to-back game days, the Warriors won against the Golden Lions following Wednesday’s 57-46 victory over Baldwin.

Olivia Weishaar dribbles the ball. Weishaar scored nine points during the game.

Senior Lauren Marton led the team win with 14 points. Despite fouling out in the third quarter, Marton’s efforts in the paint earlier in the game allowed P-T to have the upper hand for the remaining time. Twin sisters Hanna and Olivia Weishaar also worked well together during the game, assisting each other and handling the ball as guards.

P-T started the first few minutes of the game close with GS, but the Warriors quickly kicked it into high gear, ending the quarter on a 10-1 run. P-T led 22-12 at the end of the first quarter.

P-T continued to lead in the second quarter by utilizing their deep bench and defending the paint on defense. They led 32-19 at the end of the first half.

Lions point guard Mya Heasley controlled Greensburg Salem on offense, distributing the ball well, but she was unable to shoot as well as in previous games. Greensburg Salem’s Kerr (six points) and Blessing Gantt (nine points) led the Lions in scoring.

Similar to their win the day before, the Warriors came alive in the third quarter, outscoring the Golden Lions 17-3 in eight minutes. P-T’s strong defense, generated by junior Torrie DeStefano’s steals, did not allow a single point until the last 20 seconds of the third quarter when Regan Kerr scored a fouled layup and made the free throw.

Mya Heasley drives towards the basket. Heasley scored three points throughout the night.

The Warriors held onto the large lead margin, ending the game 57-31 and advancing to 7-0 on the season. Once again, P-T has scored in the 50s like each of their other six wins.

Penn-Trafford (7-0) will play their next game away at Greater Latrobe (3-2) on Dec. 17.

With the score constantly tying and the lead switching between teams, fans were on the edge of their seats at the Penn-Trafford vs. Baldwin boys basketball game this Wednesday.

The game ultimately ended in a Highlander victory (58-53), led by Nate Wesling who scored 18 points and made the only two successful three-pointers for Baldwin.

Sophomore Nick Ponko drives to the net.

The game started just as close as it finished; at the end of the first quarter, the teams were tied 15 all thanks to a buzzer-beater three from Wesling.

P-T battled in the second quarter, earning a five-point lead 30-25. Evan Gross led his team with 9 points in the first half.

The Highlanders quickly reversed the scoreboard, tying the game 37-37 with 3:50 left in the third quarter, then ending the quarter in the lead 43-40.

Zach Feldman holds the ball in the game against Baldwin on 12/12.

Baldwin carried this momentum to the end of the game. While the Highlanders only led 48-46 with 3:30 left in the game, P-T could not squeeze out an upset and fell 58-53.

P-T’s record is now 3-3, and undefeated Baldwin moves to 4-0.

Could Penn-Trafford’s consistent scoring be the reason they have a consistent record?

The Warriors have finished their sixth game scoring in the 50s. The Warriors have also won their sixth game in a row.

Penn-Trafford girls basketball protected their undefeated record after defeating the Baldwin Highlanders 57-46 at home this Wednesday.

Raya Johnson shoots a three-pointer. She led the team with three threes.

Freshman Raya Johnson led P-T in three-pointers (3), and junior Torrie DeStefano led overall with 15 points.

The game started closer than the Warriors would have liked. Highlander Mary Vargo scored five points in the first quarter, taking her team to only 1 point away going into the second. The Warriors led 12-11 at the end of the first.

P-T slowly worked their way to a larger lead in the second, resulting in a Warrior lead 26-21 going into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Warriors found their strive, outscoring the Highlanders 19-9. Torrie DeStefano made five of six free throws in this quarter, scoring a total of eight, third-quarter points for P-T.

Torrie DeStefano drives to the hoop. She led the team in points with 15.

Baldwin made their last and strongest attempt to win in the final quarter, but their efforts came up short. Lynsey Bernotas scored six points in the fourth, but the Highlanders could not find the time to recover from such a deficit.

P-T increases to 6-0, while Baldwin is now 2-3 on the season. The Warriors will next play against Greensburg Salem on Thursday at home.

The Penn-Trafford Warriors boys basketball team almost completed an impressive comeback against the Uniontown Raiders this Tuesday in their first section matchup of the season. Despite the Warriors outscoring Uniontown in the last two quarters, their early-on problems and fouling trouble prevented them from reaching victory 68-64.

The Warriors could not find a rhythm on offense to start the game, turning the ball over repeatedly to go down 20-13 by the end of the first quarter.

PG Calvin Winfrey led the Raiders in the first quarter and continued his momentum throughout the game, totaling 26 points. For P-T, Zach Feldman thrived in the paint, scoring 15 points during the night.

The second quarter finished similar to the first for the Warriors, still down 39-25.

P-T finally took off in the third quarter. Tyler Anthony began to find the net from the three-point line, and the Warriors scored 21 points within eight minutes.

Only down 51-46 at the end of the third, the Warriors knew the game would come down to the final quarter.

P-T continued to shorten the point differential, eventually working it down to three points with under a minute left (62-59). After another basket for each team canceled out (64-61), the Raiders scored again, soon followed by a corner three from Warrior Jack Weishaar.

With only 1.6 seconds left, Uniontown led 66-64 and would inbound the ball. P-T had no other option than to foul Winfrey, who made both free throws to seal the Raiders victory.

The Warriors’ record falls to 3-2, while the Raiders increase to 3-1 on the season. P-T will play their next game against Baldwin at home on Dec. 11.
