Sophomore leads fundraising campaign for cancer victims

Abby Rayman, a sophomore at Penn-Trafford High School, is leading a fundraising campaign to support children and families affected by cancer. After being inspired by the story of an 8-year-old cancer survivor and family friend, Rayman decided to help, aiming to raise $10,000 for the cause.

“I’ve always loved to give back to the community and support people…this program seemed like a great way to continue that,” Rayman said. “Once I realized these efforts would be going towards helping families like hers, I knew I needed to do this.”

Rayman’s involvement began after her mom’s friend suggested she take on the project. After researching the cause, Rayman gathered a team and began organizing her fundraising efforts.

To spread the word, she was featured in an article in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and shared her campaign across social media. The response from the community has been overwhelmingly supportive.

“The support has been incredible,” stated Rayman. “People have been so encouraging, and it’s amazing to see how many are getting behind the cause.”

One of Rayman’s challenges was assembling her team. She explained that while she was initially hesitant to ask others, she ultimately reached out to people she had not considered before.

“Building my team was a little difficult at first, but now we’re really strong and working great together,” she said.

The most rewarding aspect of the fundraising, according to Rayman, has been realizing the profound impact her efforts will have on both patients and their families.

“I used to think the money went just to the patients for activities while they were in the hospital,” Rayman shared. “Now I understand that the funds support the families, too, especially those with younger siblings who need help while the parents care for their child in the hospital.”

P-T has been a strong source of support for her initiative. Principal Tony Aquilio expressed his support, and Nurse Lisa Popovich assisted by promoting the fundraising page in weekly Community Action Program (CAP) emails.

Additionally, Rayman was interviewed on PTTV to further raise awareness.

Rayman’s message to others looking to give back: “It might seem daunting at first, but just do it. It’s so rewarding, and you’ll feel amazing knowing you’re helping people in need.”

With a goal of raising $10,000, Rayman noted that she is confident that her team will surpass the target, fueled by the strong community support behind her.
