Penn-Trafford girls basketball claims section title, pursues undefeated season

After waiting 10 years, the Penn-Trafford girls basketball team picked up the scissors and cut down the net this Thursday.

“We’re the best in the section. Everyone saw that tonight, and we proved it. It feels great to finally come out on top,” said P-T point guard Torrie DeStefano.

The P-T Warriors (21-0, 12-0) started and ended Section 2-5A on a high note. They dominated their final section game 63-34 over the Indiana Little Indians (16-5, 10-2), becoming champions for the first time since 2015.

“It feels surreal. I knew we could do it, but to have it actually happen, for all of us to be standing there cutting the net on a ladder, it just feels like so much excitement I can’t even describe,” said senior Lauren Marton, who led the Warriors with 16 points.

The Warriors took charge of the game from the start. Kamryn Piper won the tipoff, Marton scored a layup and the Warriors earned the ball back from an Indiana travel– all within the first 30 seconds.

Junior Hanna Weishaar from Penn-Trafford shoots a 3-pointer against Indiana. P-T made a total of nine 3-pointers in their 63-34 victory.

Marton scored the first seven points of the game for the Warriors.

“I try to come out with 110 percent, and that’s what I did,” Marton said.

By halftime, P-T more than doubled the score of Indiana. After seven players for the Warriors scored, they led 31-15 going into the third quarter.

P-T kept their momentum up near the end of the third, and finished the game with a 20-point lead, guaranteeing their sole possession of the section title.

The Warriors have won by at least 20 points in their last four games. Coincidentally, the Warriors have also scored exactly 63 points in their last three games. They have never dropped below 50.

P-T will play their final game of the regular season away at Upper Saint Clair on Feb 8. If P-T wins, this will be their first-ever undefeated regular season.

Penn-Trafford senior Lauren Marton finishes over Indian defenders in the second half. Marton, a Shippensburg University commit, scored 16 points in the Warriors’ victory.

“We want to be 22-0, and we know we can be. We need to come out and play four full quarters again,” Marton said.
