Penn-Trafford High School has two “supersubs,” substitute teachers who report to the school everyday to be assigned coverage or other duties. This year’s two supersubs are Michael Russo and Colton Lonero.
When Lonero and Russo step foot into the building, they check a coverage sheet sent to their e-mails. Depending on how many teachers are absent, they may get assigned to substitute for one teacher for the entire day, or to just provide coverage during certain periods. If there is a day where coverage is not needed by them, they do what they can to help.
“I will take a walk around the hallway and make sure students aren’t loitering around or causing trouble,” Russo said.
Both subs stated that their job comes with many challenges. When subbing, sometimes they don’t know the subject being taught or if they do know it, they try to give the best lecture they could. One major thing Lonero and Russo like about being substitutes is interacting with the kids themselves, along with the other teachers.
Lonero stated, “Obviously I can’t teach every subject so I think that whatever I can talk to kids about what would help them in their life and with their days is what I really enjoy.”
Lonero has similar goals, except he wishes to become a phys ed teacher at PTHS. Russo has a goal of becoming a math teacher at PTHS by next spring. Additionally, Russo also has goals of opening his own retail shop one day.
“Hopefully I can have a retail store or something like that, maybe a small little shop,” Russo stated.
