Elton John’s unique final tour in Pittsburgh

At age 75, Sir Elton Hercules John has produced over a dozen concerts in Pittsburgh, with hundreds more worldwide. His show at PNC Park on Sept. 16 displayed his iconic tracks and dedicated one to a fan.

While September’s show was John’s final concert in Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania, it was not his first farewell tour here. On Oct. 18th, 1984, he held his first “farewell tour,” titled Breaking Hearts. Many of his most popular songs, such as” Candle in the Wind,” “I’m Still Standing,” Rocket Man,” “Crocodile Rock” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” were featured in both concerts, nearly four decades apart. The concerts differ, though, as two of the four encore tracks in “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” include songs now featuring the vocals of Dua Lipa and Britney Spears.

Specifically, Pittsburgh’s show had a unique moment. John’s most streamed song in the United Kingdom, per officialcharts.com, “Tiny Dancer”, was dedicated to Jamie Guttenberg, a victim of the Parkland Shooting in 2018. A relative of Guttenberg was attending the show that day, surely leaving no dry eyes in the audience. Before beginning the track, John stated, “thank you for dancing to my song, [Jamie].”

Unlike the Breaking Hearts show, 2022’s performance was conducted at PNC Park and was his first official concert at the stadium. Unsurprisingly, the stadium was completely sold out and packed with fans. For reference, Civic Arena, the home of the 1984 show, had 17,181 seats. PNC has 38,362 seats.

John has been active in the music industry since 1962, achieving five Grammy Awards,  two Golden Globes, a Tony Award, Disney Legends Award, and having the best-selling single of all time with his 1997 version of “Candle in the Wind.”
