Rian Johnson’s 2019 mystery film “Knives Out” is a thrill-seeking and heart-racing whodunit film investigating the death of famous novelist Harlan Thrombey, played by Christopher Plummer, who supposedly committed suicide in his antiquated Victorian-like mansion.
On the evening of Thrombey’s 85th birthday, as he is celebrating with family, people begin to clear out. However, many of his family members stay in the mansion overnight. Between midnight and 3 a.m., a handful of his children and other family members recall seeing Thrombey. His daughter-in-law, Joni, goes to check on him and finds him playing a board game upstairs with his personal nurse, Marta Cabrera.
The next morning, Thrombey is found dead on a couch in his bedroom with a slit throat and a knife in hand.
The film captures every moment of the evening of the murder from many characters’ perspectives, creating an insanely interesting plot. After seeing every perspective for the night, including Thrombey’s own, the audience is able to discover who technically killed the famous author.
After revealing this, the police investigation is shown throughout the rest of the film. The audience is able to see the murderer take part in assisting the police. This fuels the majority of the movie and is what I would consider a majorly captivating and unique storyline. For murder-mystery junkies, this film is the closest thing to a real-life Clue game you’ll ever have to look for.
The movie concludes with an extremely unexpected plot twist in which the audience realizes the true murder was set up by another character.
“Knives Out” absolutely defined the standards and intensity a whodunit murder-mystery film should have with interesting characters, a beautiful setting and an unbelievably creative storyline. The Warrior rates it a 9.5/10.
