P-T Quiz Team advances to states

Spectrum’s Quiz Team members have shown they are well-versed in making it as far as they have in competition. On March 29, the team won the regional competition at Westmoreland Intermediate Unit, advancing them to states at the Harrisburg Capitol Building on the House and Senate floor.

The team defeated Greensburg Salem and Norwin High School, which earned them the chance to compete in the state competition. The competitors for states are still unknown.

Senior Colton Pikovsky said the team practices daily when nearing the date of a competition, but they typically practice right after school until 3:30 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The material the team can be quizzed on involves a wide variety of subjects.

According to senior Antonio DeMarchis, such subjects can include math, science, history, literature, art and more. The range depends on the caliber of the competition.

DeMarchis said that everyone has their specialties, which helps the team come together to succeed.

“We have our specialties. All of the members of the team do,” he said. “As a team we can come together and share our knowledge and be successful.”

Senior Daniel Lipinski is the Quiz Team captain. He is one of the main spokespersons of the team, and is considered one of the most well-rounded, according to DeMarchis. Lipinski has a say in who will play in competition.

Lipinski said that Hometown High-Q is a “different breed” than Quiz Team.

The Quiz Team competes at the semi-finals at the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit.

The difference between the two is that a select few from Quiz Team are chosen for the Hometown High-Q, and the competition is live.

Pikovsky, DeMarchis and himself were chosen to represent P-T against Pittsburgh Central Catholic and Hampton High School, broadcasted on KDKA.

“Just being on stage is crazy to me. It doesn’t last as long, and it is just the three of us,” Lipinski said.

On March 23, the three beat Hampton at semi-finals, but did not make it to finals.

The Quiz Team’s state competition is scheduled for April 26.

“We are really excited for states… I am really looking forward to it and I am sad to see [Quiz Team] coming to a close,” Lipinski said.
