Hunters hunt for safety

Hunting season is here at Penn-Trafford, with bow season coming to an end and rifle season soon beginning for deer. Statewide bow season will come to an end for deer on Nov. 12;  it will not restart until late December.

However, rifle season for deer will begin on Nov. 26, or Dec. 1. depending on the firearm that is used . New hunters must be aware of safety procedures, whether hunting alone or with somebody that is experienced. Every hunter must complete a hunters safety course.

“I took it when I was 12, but before my dad taught me everything. But if you do not know all the rules about hunting I feel it’s important to make sure you do take it. You shouldn’t just take a gun or bow out in the woods because anything could happen so you should be prepared.” said Junior Kylie Schmidt.

49 P-T students were asked in a google form if they would be participating in this year’s hunting season. 21 students said that they have participated in the Hunter-Trapper Safety course.

The course is required by state law to be taken, regardless of age, before anyone may buy a hunting or trapping license/permit. This class goes over hunting rules, regulations and safety procedures. You may either attend a six to eight hour class or attend an online class for those 16 years of age or older. You must pass the final exam given at the end of the course before paying and receiving the opportunity to buy your license or permit.

“The test was pretty self-explanatory. I just went and only missed one on the test as a whole. You should definitely take it.” stated junior Ethan Nicastro.
