Physics teacher Eric Reger is adding to his coaching positions at Penn-Trafford High School, taking on the club sport of indoor track in addition to his outdoor track and field responsibilities.
The season is already underway, having begun in the first week of January. Reger said it will continue for two months, ending at the beginning of March. Athletes can expect workouts two to three times a week, always on Tuesdays and Thursdays with some Friday practices when coaches are available.
Reger said he will also have help from outdoor track coaches Sarah Loughner, Jason Caruso and Shane Bush. During the outdoor season, Loughner mainly focuses on coaching the high jumpers, Caruso manages the distance runners and Bush helps the throwers, but each of them will contribute to training all athletes in indoor track.
Workouts will be catered towards each type of track athlete, according to Reger. In order to do this, he said athletes will be broken up into groups to rotate through multiple workout stations after completing a dynamic warm up. Students can expect plyometric exercises and and strength work in the weight room to condition themselves for the outdoor track season
Reger said he recommends that interested athletes attend practice regularly, but only if they are serious about the sport.
“Indoor conditioning is not mandatory,” Reger said. “Don’t come if you are going to whine or complain.”
He added that the goal of the indoor season is to handle conditioning so that athletes are ready to focus on skills, speed and strategy by the time outdoor season starts.
Reger said there will be two meets for a select few indoor athletes to attend which will occur on Jan. 20 and Feb. 10 at Edinboro University. He is looking to limit the number of participants to those who “have made previous marks” and have a chance of going into the finals of their events, as there are only one or two school vans available to take athletes there and back.
Any students who are interested in joining are still permitted to do so. Sign ups can be found on the high school’s athletics webpage.
