Penn-Trafford running back John Gay is helping to lead the Warriors towards a conference championship and No.1 playoff seed in 5A. He spoke about the season before P-T’s win over Kiski Area Friday night.
Q: Did you expect all of the success that has come so far this year?
A: Well I have just been practicing hard and the coaches are allowing me to go out on the field and do what I can do, and I am lucky to have the line I do so they can get me through those holes.
Q: You had success last year, but what is different this year that allowed you to take such a big step forward.?
A: This year we have a way better line and a way better team in general, and we have just been playing harder and have a different mindset this year and it is allowing us to play better.
Q: What did your offseason consist of?
A: It basically just consisted of getting recruited by some schools and working out to try and get better at football.
Q: Does it help having another really solid running back like Caleb Lisbon?
A: We are a one-two punch, it is really pick your poison. You can choose to either get beat by him or get beat by me, and so it really is nice.
Q: What would you say are the biggest obstacles moving forward?
A: Right now our biggest obstacle is Mckeesport, but another big one is ourselves. If we play like we know we can play, I don’t believe there is anyone who can beat us. But if we come out slow we are only gonna beat ourselves.
Q: Can you give me a run-down of the college search?
A: Pitt is recruiting me now. I have a preferred walk on [offer] from Penn State and an offer from Cornell. Some schools from the MAC (Mid American Conference, Division I) are recruiting me now too so I am just waiting to see what else comes.
Q: If you guys want to make it back to Heinz for the Championship, what must be improved on?
A: We have to show that we can pass the ball, which we definitely can do with Cam [Laffoon], but I am confident that if we do what we know best there is no one that can beat us.
